Rest of the week and later

September 3rd - 8th

We had a wonderful week with my daughter-in-law and grandson. We were so fortunate with the weather, it was really hot and we had all three doors open onto the terrace and were able to eat breakfasts there - though there was a bit if a chill in the early morning and in the evening; it was obvious autumn was not far away.

Wednesday 4th was a particularly hot day, and my daughter-in-law and I went into Westerham, a very pretty little town just a few miles away along the A25. There is a tiny green with a statue of Winston Churchill (Chartwell, his house, is just a few miles away) as well as a statue of General Wolfe, who commanded the army that defeated the French at the Battle of Quebec in 1759. His house is at the eastern end of the town. Just off the green is a very pretty church which has a Burne-Jones stained glass window.

Westerham is quite a historic place - there are remains from every period going right back to prehistoric times - though most of the buildings are from a much later date.

This is a particularly charming little pedestrian walkway. As you can see, some of the shops have windows that belong more in the 1800s. There are some lovely little independent shops in the town, where we browsed and shopped for quite some time. Fortunately for my bank balance, I was too hot to shop for clothes or shoes, so I'll have to go back again! When we felt we had had enough of shops, we were able to catch a bus back to Oxted.

The rest of the week seemed to flash past very quickly. My grandson had no desire to get into the car to be driven anywhere else, he just wanted to run about in the garden or roll down the steep banks or ride his little bicycle on the terrace, so we made no more expeditions. At the weekend, my son came down to take them home again, and it was obvious that the good weather was over when it started to rain on the Sunday as they set off home.
