Back Home

Wednesday September 24th

This was a day almost entirely spent in travel, and there are no photographs. It was not a good birthday at all - Paul forgot the date, for a start! The only person to wish me Happy Birthday was the Customs man at the UK Border.

A coach arrived at the boat in the late morning to take us the very short distance to the station. I had hoped to be able to visit the 4711 factory to see it and to buy some Cologne, but there wasn't time, unfortunately.

During the time we spent at the station, we decide to buy some lunch to eat on the train. Although I felt I ought to buy some German sausage, I settled instead on a chicken schnitzel in a nice roll, and I must say it was delicious. However, something disagreed with my insides very much, either that or whatever the previous day's problems had been, and later that night I had a very nasty attack of gut rot!

We changed train in Brussels for the Eurostar, and eventually arrived quite late in St Pancras where we set off for King's Cross, looking for the correct place to catch a Thameslink train most of the way home. After a lot of wandering about, we were told to go back to St Pancras! It's so long since we had caught a Thameslink train, we had no idea that was where they had moved to.

It was a long wait - we had just missed a train - and then we changed at East Croydon where we caught the connection to Oxted. Then it was just a taxi home, where we fell into bed, too exhausted even to unpack!
