Sydney to Hobart

Monday 10th October
There is very little to say about today, and no pictures because I have not taken any. We re-packed our luggage in our new cases, and found that we had less space than before. This was not at first a problem for me, as my bag was not full, but I now have the overflow from Paul's bag so my bag weighs 21 kilos!

We checked out of our room at 10 and were to be picked up for the airport at 12. As we did not like the luggage storage arrangements, we sat with our luggage and drank coffee and read until the airport shuttle picked us up. It was quite an interesting trip through the western suburbs of Sydney while picking up other people. It really is a very pleasant city, with some nice properties, and everything looks delightful on a beautiful sunny day.

Hobart is a bit of a contrast. We left a sunny Sydney in a comfortable 20 degrees, and arrived in a gloomy, wet and windy Hobart in 10 degrees! The airport shuttle drove down a valley which wound between very green hills mostly covered with forest. The grass is very green too - I imagine it reflects the high rainfall. Hobart seems to be a city of hills, and some of them are very steep. We are not staying in the city, however. We are quite a way outside the city, at a very upmarket place with a Marina full of expensive boats. Not only is this, apparently, a 4 star hotel, it is also a Casino! We feel a little out of place.

As it is raining hard, we have decided not to go for a walk. Our tour begins tomorrow afternoon, so if the weather remains awful tomorrow morning, we may just use the the gym and swimming pool here instead of exploring in the rain.
